Like, vampires: Traditionally, they were undead, like zombies, and sucked blood. Other variations sucked out life energy, but the point is, they were scary. There were, at some point, entire communities that believed in them, and they were not thinking "Ooh, he's hot, and he SPARKLES!" No, they were thinking "I'd better stake grandma in the ground before she gets up and tries to kill us all." If you're going to create your own mythos, and they're interesting, fine. But coming up with some half-butted "science" to justify it, no. That's just not good storytelling.
