Thank you, everyone, for your help. Since it looks like a band-aid is not going to fix things for this little guy, I'm going to look into some local clubs and societies. I'll make a few phone calls and see if anyone has a goldfish pond with room for one more. If anyone knows of someone with a setup like this in the Massachusetts area, let me know :). On the plus side, this whole situation has made me realize I definitely want a second fish tank eventually. :) I imagine it won't have goldfish, but I'll just have to decide what else could go in it, and isn't that a fun game?

Update! My dentist's office goldfish pond will take the fish! However, it is now New England winter, and the fish is weak. I was going to temporarily house him/nurse him through the cold months, but since my boyfriend, whose desk it currently resides on, has decided to get a real tank, I pointed out HE should nurse the fish. He agreed, so my 15 gallon is mine again! Muhahaha!

Common goldfish do get big, but they don't HAVE to live in ponds if you get them a big enough tank. They can grow up to 14 inches, I'm sure more but a 55 gallon tank would be okay for 1. :)

55 gallons is far from an option, and if I ever get one, it ain't gonna' be devoted to a couple giant goldfish that constantly poop. He'll be very happy at my dentist's :D

My dentist sorta' thought I was nuts when I asked, but I'm pretty sure it entertained the office.

Great to hear you found the little guy a home! Way to beat the odds on that one. :)
