I've never really been a fan of fishing, or any "sport" that thrives on needlessly capturing or killing animals. Even if they can't feel pain in the same way we do, I still think it's horrible to inflict terror and fear on animals for pleasure. People may argue about whether or not a fish knows "pain" or simply "stimuli", but there can be no doubt that it fears death.

"Many years ago, I was fishing, and as I was reeling in the poor fish, I realized, 'I am killing him—all for the passing pleasure it brings me.' And something inside me clicked. I realized as I watched him fight for breath, that his life was as important to him as mine is to me."

I e-mailed my biology professor who studies fundulus and killifish what he thought. He said:

"I would say that fish experience pain in a fundamentally similar way to how we do. Their central nervous system is strongly homologous to ours, with a major difference of fish don't have a cerebral cortex like mammals. The same neurotransmitters, receptors and cells are present. Most ichthyologists today would agree with my view, although differences might appear over the meaning of words."
