The Goldfish rule of thumb is 10gal per 1 goldfish. That's what I see all aver and follow strictly. I do say 1 fancy would do better in a 20 gal as the smallest. I had mine in a 10 just for a few months and now have him in his 30 and he is loving it. I might get him a friend soon.

Sorry, I forgot hatchetfish schooled. But they are still interesting to check out.

I only have 1 betta left, but he's a cool blue marble!

What about dwarf puffers? I don't think they need to school. vaygirl keeps one on its own.

The smallest goldfish is a Siamese doll but it's extremely rare. Here's my late one, Cash.

You could try shortbodied orandas and still house a couple of them in a 30g but that's it. As a warning, all round bodied fancies are very prone to floaty issues so be particularly selective in their foods if you wish to keep them. The fancy goldfish in general can grow to an average of 8-10 inches in length if well cared for. Unfortunately, a lot of them are easily stunted. If you want one with the best potential, either you buy from a breeder who owns quality goldies for you to enjoy, or give them as much space and foods as possible.

Many folks make the wrong decision to feed young goldfish less than 3x a day. And while this is understandable, juvenile goldfish are easily stunted from inadequate nutrition. The amount of foods provided should be compensated by more filtration, more water changes and more space. The works. And since goldfish do not have a stomach at all, it is better to give them multiple small meals than a few large meals to ensure they will not suffer digestive upsets.

@ Lupin: I never knew that about the feeding. I always read to not feed them a lot throughout the day cause it makes more waste and can make your tank dirty. My Oranda is about 6-8 months. Should I feed him more than 2x a day? I want him to be the best he can be.

Also, I do plan on getting one more oranda buddy for him. I know goldfish are very social and every time he sees my pleco he goes mad to get his attention :p
