Is this an inappropriate tank mate?

I was browsing a catalog and came across this ad...

Granted this is from 1938 but ALLIGATORS...really?

Hey and you can get your name on a turtle too. Awesome.

Interesting side note: I did not know that in the days before pepper spray, a squirt gun was your best defense...

An alligator is definietly an inappropriate tank mate. They eat fish.

Interesting though about the squirt gun...I knew supersoakers were a good defense! And they said I was crazy!

That might be the stupidest thing I've ever read. Did I seriously read that you can keep a turtle on your desk or dresser or did I just misunderstand that? Or that you could tie a string around it's neck and pin it to your lapel? Eeeeeeek!

Yeah, sure, singing, laughing alligators that cause no trouble and cost nothing to feed. Right. :/

1938 was a little unclear on proper animal care. Of course, this was being marketed to lil boys right? Still, yeesh.

I love looking at old ads, they sold the craziest things! Though in the case of live animals, it was usually pretty sad for the animal, and dangerous for the purchaser, or for those in the area where the wild animal was inevitably released when it got too large/dangerous for the purchaser to keep. I bet this is probably the root of the "alligators in the sewer"myth.

Don't forget you can let him just "seek his own food"....you don't even need to feed him...

Haha! Love them, also love how it tells you to mix ammonia in your squirt gun. That would definately keep people away, since the stinging sensation is probably their skin burning off. LOL.

I've got no tanks to show off!
Learning as much as I can

They eat people, too. What a stupid ad.
