Exclamation No sprouts for me, thanks....

Ok, this is definitely OT, but worth mentioning...

It seems that the lastest outbreak of food borne E. coli Bacteria in Europe is being traced back to an organic farm in Germany... and the biggest suspect is sprouts.

For those who no idea what a sprout is, they are tasty little vegetable sprouts... usually various bean sprouts. They go into salads and are meant to be eaten raw.

Sprouts have had this problem on and off for years. I haven't eaten them since the 1970's, because they are one of the most likely carriers of bacteria in raw food/salad bars.

If one grows their own sprouts at home, you can much better control the conditions they are grown in. But eating pre-grown sprouts (even the ones sold in a supermarket) is a risk.

FYI...

Right now I think the majority of the cases are in Europe. But it has happened elsewhere in the past, including the US.

Not only have various bacteria been found as contaminants, but parasites as well. And in April of this year, China had cancer causing agents found in some of their bean sprouts!

If that's not enough to keep you sproutless, consider that there is some debate whether sprouts are toxic all on their own, without external contamination! This is due to certain chemicals produced in the sprouting plants themselves.

Here's a couple of FDA links on sprout recalls in this country:

It pays to know what you're eating, folks...

On a somewhat related note, I was watching mythbusters today and they were testing the Seinfeld double dip chip myth. They had to disregard the first test because the salsa and French onion had bacteria growth on the control Petrie dish straight out of the jar. That stuff's everywhere.

I'm telling my parents about this though considering my dad was reading the news and watching people flame Sara Palin..He probably knows already. We don't eat sprouts anyways. Everyone in my family hates them. The closest we get is green beans.

Update:

So, now the authorities have exonerated the German sprouts.

Unfortunately, they are no closer to figuring out where the E. Coli outbreak is coming from. :(

Sprouts remain a dangerous nutrition source, however. No one is who is very young, very old or immune compromised should eat them - the risk is too great, for all the other reasons previously mentioned.
