Depends on the snail. The most common ones (mystery snails) prefer leftover food and fresh veggies. Mine loved spinach.

A good algae eating snail is the nerite snail. Pretty awesome looking ones too.

I know. I tried scolding Apache but he just didn't listen *sigh*... he would have been better off living alone... I don't think he was even cut out for a divided tank. Too much stress for such an aggressive boy.

Arwin the naughty Papillon puppy

No fishies for me right now... expecting a baby in June 2013!

{edit: OR a Plecostemus! But not enough room for the pleco in a divded tank >.<}

Plus I'm sceeered of putting snails in with my bettas. The bettas like to try to eat their faces off >.< Poor snail I had with Apache lived in terror.. :/ Apache was very violent... lol But don't worry I saved the snail.
A little algae is not a bad thing. ;) But if it's taking over, you've got to figure out which kind you have, then fix the imbalance of nutrients/light that is causing it.

dragon, I get brown algae on the tank walls/dividers/decorations... and then I got this bright green bubbly algae growing on top of my java moss... the only way I have ever been able to control the brown algae is by having a plecostemus.

How old is your tank? Diatoms are fairly common in younger tanks (less than 1 year old) and usually the situation resolves itself on its own once the tank matures a bit. It is an eyesore, to be sure! But usually nothing to worry about, unless the tank has been established for a long while and they suddenly appear out of nowhere.

Not sure about the green bubbly stuff, see if you can find it here: http://www.plantgeek.net/article_viewer.php?id=9
