Being at Petco was saddening. First of all, I saw a dad and his young son, who couldn't have been much older than 4, looking at the bettas on display. He was going to buy that kid, a kid who's barely old enough for preschool, a pet fish!!!! The dad, who was probably the one caring for the fish, was absolutely clueless about them too. He picked up a cup with halfmoon in it and commented, "I didn't know their were bettas like that." You can imagine how close to boiling over I was.
I tried my darndest not to just let loose and scream at him, and turned my focus instead, to finding a betta to save. To my horror, this was only making me madder. Some bettas had bloated bellies, and looked horribly hunched. Dropsy. The store was selling bettas with dropsy. Some were also looking like they had swim badder disease as they were swimming irradically. One was floating on his side at the surface, and I thought he was dead, until I tapped the cup and he came to life. Another was positioned perpendicular to the surface, mouth at the surface, tail end pointed straight down. Only half the fish looked anywhere near reasonably healthy. I did see a very lovely black doubletail halfmoon, and almost got him, but I settled on Zephyr.
I was thoroughly dissapointed in Petco today.
