In the original Japanese version, the one that wasn't horrible, they did acknowledge Haruka (Amora/Uranus) and Michiru (Michele/Neptune) as lovers. In fact, there is an episode that dwelves back to their high school days when they first meet. Its episode 106.
It starts with Haruka running on the school's track and saying to herself that she wants to run faster than the wind itself. Apparently, nothing mattered to her except running on that circuit. Then, she after she was finished running, she is greeted by a fellow classmate who introduces her to a promising and intelligent art student named Michiru. Haruka is instantly taken aback by Michiru's beauty and grace. Suddenly, running on the circuit isn't all that important anymore to her. Michiru tells her that she hardly seemed to brake a sweat running and that she was most likely holding back, then she leans in and whispers something that only Haruka can hear, "You can hear the wind rustling, can't you?". Haruka then knows that Michiru is "that person" the one who can see her "real figure" and her destiny as a senshi. Haruka, not wanting to accept her destiny, pretends not to care, declines the offer of being drawn, and walks away.
Later, as Haruka is entering the field house, she finds that Michiru, has transformed into a senshi, Sailor Neptune, and is fighting a student who has turned into a grotesque monster. Neptune is about to kill the monster with Deep Submerge but Haruka pleads her to stop because it was once a student She then asks why Neptune chose to take the path of the senshi and Michiru says she didn't, it chose her. Suddenly, as they are distracted by one another, the monster takes the opportunity to attack them both. Neptune cries out and throws Haruka to the ground, taking the brunt of the attack, becoming badly hurt. neptune despenses with a final Deep Submerge attack before collapsing into Haruka's arms, and the monster returns to human once again.
Haruka asks why she would do such a thing, to allow her hands to be hurt and no longer be able to play the violin. Neptune then explains that the life of a senshi isn't always easy and that sacrifices have to be made. She goes on to say that she is glad that Haruka is the one, the senshi she was looking for. She explains to Haruka that she has been watching her while she was running on the track, quite a lot actually, wanting to ride with Michiru in her car down the beach. She also wishes she could be true to her feelings like Haruka was. Haruka says she has done nothing but try to run away from them. Then she knows at that moment, that she must stop running away from everything and accept her role as a senshi and become Sailor Uranus.
