They were not Matt but had just started to lurk here and use the stickys for information. A few of the betta were ones I had given to them and helped set up the tanks. It hurt the most watching them cry. We try to be supportive and strong. They will get through this and recover but the first day back to something like this emotional to say the least.

I'm so sorry to hear about your friend. I cannot imagine what everyone in Calgary is going through. In 20 mins I would have packed food and Oliver and the bunny. Thousands of people are homeless and I bet there are thousands of drowned pets and people too. Such a sin. :(

@matt, I guess they're both zebra nerites. Hodor always hides I haven't really seen him to check his shell since I put him in there 2 weeks ago. One of Milly's antennae is shorter than the other. I blame Bowser when he was alive, always picking at something.

What else can cause fish to gasp at the water surface? My gouramis seem to be gasping, but they play/chase quite alot. I've also noticed maybe 1 of my angels gasping....there's no ammonia and I just did a 50% WC yesterday :/

Nitrites I believe can cause gasping. I was going to also say low oxygen but gouramis can breathe from the surface so it shouldn't bother them.

Otherwise, they all appear very happy. Active, bright colors n such...nitrites really couldn't spike overnight unless the tank was overstocked right? Gill movement doesn't appear to be labored either.

no
it looks like gasping

But the swim, eat and play normally. They're all very bright in colors and gill movement is not labored. I'm a bit stumped.

Hmm that's odd. I would just keep eyes on them and see if they start acting any differently.

Just took my dog out for a walk for the first time in weeks (she was on heat and is really hard for me to control) and she was so good. Normally she just switches off and completely ignores the fact she knows her commands but today she was listening and hardly responded to a loose dog in someone's yard.

Bought some real live plants - anarachis. Fish seem happy.
So nitrites may cause gasping? Time for me to do another water change then, a 75% this time!

Over hundreds of bettas die in their small, dirty cups each day. Only you can help them live. Research and then save them, today!
