Angry Free Fish? Good or bad? Opinions?

So a while back one of my neighbors got two tetras to add to her pretty 20 gallon tank. We went to PetSmart together and there were two tetras with scoliosis (bent spines) that were cast off in a one gallon on a shelf. I got mad and asked why they were in there. The employees answer was "They're not pretty enough to sell so we're going to dispose of them out back." I was horrified and asked how often they did this, he replied; "whenever a fish isn't perfect enough to sell we do." So I said "So because these two little tetras have bent spines they're going to be killed?!" "well, yeah..." he said.
At that my friend exclaimed "We'll take them."
I nodded firmly, and the man shrugged and said "Sure. Be my guest."
So we got two free tetras. One is pink, one is blue. Their names are Faith and Hope :)
They are currently still alive, healthy, and happy! Anyways, my point is, do any of your PetSmarts or other stores near you do this? Do you think it's right?
Heck, my betta has a bent spine, it scares me to think what would have happened to my princess if my dad and I hasn't gone to the pet store right at the moment we did!
Lastly, if I ever found another free fish like this, would it be good to take it home to live in my empty one gallon? Or would that just be cruel and would it be better to leave it to die?
I'm not saying I'm going to go hunt for a free fish, I'm just wondering y'alls opinions on, if I did find one, if it'd be better to leave it or take it. Thanks for your opinions!

Good thing about bettas, you can tell them ANYTHING and they always keep your secrets :)

It depends how severe the deformity is. I have a couple of wild bettas here with spinal deformities, but although they look unsightly, it doesn't seem to have affected their development or health in any way. But there have been others in the past that have been culled.

However, some spinal deformities can cause significant problems and in those cases, it's best for the fish to be humanely euthanased. My other concern would be that the bent spine could be the symptom of disease, such as Neon Tetra disease or Fish TB. In both of those cases i certainly would not want to be bringing affected fish home.

What species of tetra are these? Tetras are shoaling fish, so your friend is going to need to increase her numbers to at least six individuals per species.

Personally, I would not bring home a fish with a deformity, even if it was free. This is simply because I don't want to be bringing potentially sick stock into my fish room and putting my other fish at risk.

Yeah, it's my weak point... I just can't see an animal suffering and not do anything about it :(

Hmm I thought Cardinal tetras were colorful and neon's were blue and red? (maybe it's the other way around)... Idk, could be wrong XD I know about bettas and lots of other animals but tetras, not so much....

Honestly though, I KNOW they weren't glofish because the pet store didn't carry glofish until recently. I remember one was blue with a yellow tail, the other was bright pink with a yellowish tail. I dunno what they are, but they're still alive and happy and cute... They look just like cardinal tetras just, ya know, colorful instead of blue and red striped...

.... Can we have pictures? Even if they're blurry, it will help us tell what they are. In my above post I posted pictures of Neons (Cardinals are the same, just more red) and GloFish. GloFish are neon pink, blue, green, orange, etc....

I can't get pictures actually... I'm sorry...
The person who has them won't talk to me, no clue why, so I can't exactly go over there and say "Hey just wanna take pics of two of the fish in your tank!" I don't even know if they're still alive XD
