Free Fish? Good or bad? Opinions?
So a while back one of my neighbors got two tetras to add to her pretty 20 gallon tank. We went to PetSmart together and there were two tetras with scoliosis (bent spines) that were cast off in a one gallon on a shelf. I got mad and asked why they were in there. The employees answer was "They're not pretty enough to sell so we're going to dispose of them out back." I was horrified and asked how often they did this, he replied; "whenever a fish isn't perfect enough to sell we do." So I said "So because these two little tetras have bent spines they're going to be killed?!" "well, yeah..." he said.
At that my friend exclaimed "We'll take them."
I nodded firmly, and the man shrugged and said "Sure. Be my guest."
So we got two free tetras. One is pink, one is blue. Their names are Faith and Hope :)
They are currently still alive, healthy, and happy! Anyways, my point is, do any of your PetSmarts or other stores near you do this? Do you think it's right?
Heck, my betta has a bent spine, it scares me to think what would have happened to my princess if my dad and I hasn't gone to the pet store right at the moment we did!
Lastly, if I ever found another free fish like this, would it be good to take it home to live in my empty one gallon? Or would that just be cruel and would it be better to leave it to die?
I'm not saying I'm going to go hunt for a free fish, I'm just wondering y'alls opinions on, if I did find one, if it'd be better to leave it or take it. Thanks for your opinions!
Good thing about bettas, you can tell them ANYTHING and they always keep your secrets :)
