You need a 2.5 gal tank, heater and silk or real plants. Then, he might have had fin rot, gill burns etc. If you get another Betta, you should take a pic then post it so we can help you ASAP.

I can't believe you're gone, Tom.

Boiling water doesn't remove the chemicals. You should have gotten water conditioner to treat the water and remove harmful chemicals. Then, you should've changed the water in the tank every day to remove harmful chemicals that the betta excretes.

There's no point in boiling water for a fish, in fact it removes the oxygen from the water. Always use water conditioner in your water to keep it safe for the fish. It is possible your fish maybe sick beforehand and died. With a gallon tank you need one 50% change and one 100% change every week..

And welcome to the forum btw, hopefully we can help you make your next betta experience more enriching. :)

Well idk, bettas can surface breathe. Also if you put the water in a jug and shake it for a few minutes it re-oxygenates the water. That's my only thought pertaining to that comment.

Betta:

Females - Red, Green, Teal, Blue, Pina, Helena
