I get ya. He might have gotten published by his parents, but his parents didn't land him on the New York Times bestseller list. I'd say that was more on the merit of his writing.

I just got Inheritance. I need to re-read the series, however.

No, they didn't, but you don't land there without being published in the first place. :p

I won't deny that it's popular and an engaging story, I just find his writing style a little immature at times. It's the same with Harry Potter, though - the majority of people only care that the story line is full of fun and adventure, rather than focussing on the way it is written. I like a good adventure as much as the next person, but as an English major (and even before I was) I'm nitpicky about written style, and I just don't think his is that great.

If you want amazing storylines, great writing and a general amazingness, try Scott Lynch's "The Lies of Locke Lamora". My favourite book ever. ;)

One can make the "immature style" argument about a lot of popular (particularly YA) series. Twilight, The Hunger Games, Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, Inheritance, etc. I agree with you! I'm willing to look past a certain degree of that kind of thing if I'm into the story and characters; I just find Paolini more palatable, I guess.

Out Of Oz - by Gregory Maguire. Last in a series of four.

Lilly - pretty white female. She was the smallest betta I have ever seen at PetSmart. Barely an inch long!
