If you go to a Hobby Lobby or Michaels, it will have a 4 on it.

Ok , so after I learn the knit and purl stitches I've pretty much learned all i need to know right ?
Like the other stitches are just variations of the knit and purl stitches right ?

Straight needles are good, but I wouldn't go longer then 10" because then they just get in the way. I prefer nickel or wood needles. Wood is great for stuff you don't want to slide. Nickel is more slick. I despise aluminum, though I might be a bit of a needle snob.
As far as a small basic scarf, I would stick with the knit stitch through the whole thing.

Good luck and have fun!
I just re-read this and I realized that u said: " would stick with the knit stitch through the whole thing". So I would only use the knit stitch though the WHOLE scarf ?

There are several different stitches, but knit and purl are your foundation.
I would knit across, turn, knit across. Yes. If you knit, turn, purl you will get stocknette and that will cause the scarf to curl.

Our mom did that the first time she started! XD

I have size 8 needles and purple worsted weight yarn and thanks to my BFFL, NFL lover 101, I've been convinced to try it out. ::)

8 month - Betta -VT-male- Peach
9 month - Golden Retriever -Female- Dixie
7 year old - Cinnamon Cockatiel -Female- Ladybird
And a black mystery snail named, Bon-Bon Hoss

To do list:
1. Save money
2. Ask Parents
3. Buy all the Bettas in PetSmart.
