This is all really interesting! As the one who comes from no background in religion/philosophy I have to say that everyone here has some pretty firm beliefs and ideas about the world!
I don't know what denomination my mother is but she recently changed it and withdrew into an anti-social shell. She tried explaining to me about her new life but it was kind of hateful and had some VERY individualistic and selfish desires. She wants nothing to do with Christams and other commercial holidays suddenly (after 26 years) and hates having to talk to her very friendly neighbors (who do her laundry for her for free).. That sort of thing makes me feel pity for them. I always thought religious groups helped its followers branch out and socialise with everyone and themselves. To rejoice and feel happy about life. Not wallow in self pity and ignore our society's rituals for the belief that Heaven will take you in. She even said she don't care about her own mother getting into Heaven bc every man is in it for themselves.
I'm not religious in any way and I have a tendency to sometimes make religious conversations awkward. Since it probably already happened, I state to the OP: What do you mean you don't care about sexism?!?!? Grimke, Stanton, and Mott are not heroes to you? (those are American reformists.. I only know the Canadian ones). Giving up personal freedom and equality to a man is okay to you? Letting men physically, emotionally and verbally assualt women is fine? Applauding those who believe women are weak minded fools who cannot survive without a generous man to look after her... etc. So if we erased the +100 years of work, women would go back to raising kids, not voting, cleaning house, waiting on her man hand to foot, keeping silent about her needs.. etc... I'm sorry, you cannot be okay with being sexist! Not as a woman in Western society.
**That has nothing to do with the topic at hand but it did affect me.

Also, nobody will die if they forego meat for a couple days. I haven't touched meat in 10 years and I'm alive and healthy! Imagine. It's all psychological and has to do with self control. If one's faith meant that much to them than it should do no harm.

That sounds less like a change of a denomination and more like a change of lifestyle and attitude.

Many religious groups do help their followers branch out and help within society (Salvation Army is of Christian heritage and look at what they do in society) but some extremely (read: radical) conservative religious groups of any belief do not and prefer to keep socialization within the religious group itself. Those kinds of religious groups are often associated with radical and occasionally militant behavior and are best taken with a grain of salt. Epsom or AQ, your choice. XD

For me with my Protestant upbringing, yes, my religion is definitely about rejoicing and finding happiness. We realize that life isn't going to be all sunshine and roses even with our Christian beliefs but we are expected to use our faith to get through tough times. It ain't always easy to do this, though.

To me that is completely different. What I mean is I hate those feminist people at my school who are all like: EQUALITY FOR WOMEN! Then expect men to treat them nicer. If you want equality then men will treat you like other men, don't expect special treatment. Then there are also the other idiots who lash out at men holding doors for them, implying that they cannot do it themselves. Do you want to know why "Chivalry is dead"? It's because of feminism -__-.

I don't know any of those people you named. Also honestly, verbally/physically/emotionally assaulting ANYBODY is NOT fine. Not just women/children, that's selfish.

Also, if you engage into a relationship in which a man takes away your freedoms, then either get out or that's just your own fault. There are some people who are okay with it, some others who are not. A lot of Asian women (myself and my mum not included, we are very white washed) don't mind it at all. As long as their husband provides money for the family, they are fine with staying at home being pretty much a servant. (Who live in western society, too...my friend's family is an example)

Haha, just because you don't like sexism doesn't mean there are people who should believe the same way :P

In any case, this is all really awesome :D Thanks everybody

The feminist thing is just stupid. For those people who watch the youtube channel NigaHiga, they made a video on it. it sorta points out that they have to make EVERYTHING equal, like women should pay for bills and ask men out on dates and hold doors open and stuff. I think the feminist are looking for men to treat them as equals, but they get the same treatment they do now -_- Sorry if anything has been said about this before, i just skimmed through, but you should find out if he's a devout christian or not. Im christian, but honestly, i think most of this is fake. I mean, plenty of bad stuff happens all the freaking time, i think if there WAS a God, it would do something. I, honestly, dont care what religion people are. Sorry if that offended anyone.

How can you be a Christian if you don't believe in God?

you can be born into a christian family and be expected to be christian (being baptized). As was I, but of course I am not a true christian I am who I am and since I question things to get answers, answers to fullfill my questions - I'm kind of avoided by MY religious side of the family

I think there is something there, just don't care. Mainly because religion has become to be a contradictive 200+ beliefs x.x

I think, you should not change yourself for him (not that you would...right?) as long as you are not constantly arguing over beliefs, or ideologies, you get along, and you mind certain things you say around family i.e. "oh my god!" or saying Jesus Christ improperly, I don't see any worry Heck I dated a New Age, and an athiest....

I've only read the first few replies so far, but I agree with everyone - its way to early to be worrying about marriage and kids. You should date him first.

I was raised a southern "bible belt" baptist, and married a strict atheist. We have been together for 15 years and married 10. It can work, if the two people care enough about each other to accept each others beliefs and are respectful of those beliefs.

My family accepts my Mr, and love him very much because they know that he LOVES me. He is "good" to me and for me. And that is more important then ANYTHING else you could toss in the mix. We truly balance each other, if that makes any sense. "You COMPLETE me..." haha, sorry, it popped in my head. What I am saying is: there are worse things you could be - or he could be - than Catholic or Buddhist.

(That is not to say my Granny isn't convinced she can convert him if she just loves him and feeds him enough. lol)

I say talk to him about it. You said you're friends, right? You don't have to tell him why you want to know, just say different religions fascinate you and you wondered if he'd talk to you about his. What's he going to do? Whip out a cross and smack you in the face with it? haha. I say bring it up. Friends talk, about EVERYTHING, I don't think religion should be any different.

With that said - Im off to read the rest of this thread. I've for a long time been looking for somewhere where people of different religions could CALMLY discuss their religions. They do fascinate ME! :)

Thanks for reading!

This is why I prefer to say I'm a believer, not "religious." I really feel "religion" and a true belief in God (or Allah or whomever) are two different things entirely. But that's just me.
