And how do you care for it?

its a floating plants, and you will love it or hate it. takes over the tank surface pike a weed, hence the name
it is a great ammonia sink :)

Im just going to get some from a LFS but when you get the duckweed do you just put it in, how do you care for it?

yup! it spreads like a disease :O but I almost killed mine in one of my tanks because the bioload was too low

I'm sure that it's beneficial for fish because they kind simulate natural cover for fish. Also they absorb ammonia from the fish's bioload and turn it into food for plants.
