Thank you both. After looking around online I'm certainly not the first person to go through this. Some people advise filling any small holes (smaller than a thumb) with aquarium sealant. I'll definitely do that with any aquarium decorations in the future. Thanks for being so nice and not making me feel guiltier.

I don't think that the rock formation caused him to die..most likely he went there to die. They tend to like privacy when they are feeling yucky. I have noticed that most Bettas are incredibly flexible, and even if they can't turn around, they will push themselves out pretty well. If he had been stuck, provided it was possible for him to get stuck in the first place, he would have been out in a few hours max- long before he died of suffocation/starvation. He clearly wanted to stay there (Bettas are weird like that). Don't feel like it was your fault, and I'm really sorry for your loss.
