Hello from Boston!

Greetings! I have joined the ranks of the betta owners as of today. I've stared at the little cups as I walked by for years, but today it was a bit too much and a little fish came home with me. I am now the proud owner of a yellow and blue veil tail male named Lucky. He's from Petsmart and I don't think his future was looking too bright. Now he's happily investigating his new tank and . . . currently flaring at a bottle of hand soap. Huh.

I joined the forum so I could get expert advice on how to take care of him. In high school I would usually have a betta on my desk. I had a one gallon tank that housed several red and blue bettas through the years. Now I'm an adult and looking to improve the quality of care. I'm already planning Lucky's upgrade, so I'll be heavily researching live plants.

Nice to meet everyone!

Hi Catie

Welcome to the forum. Lucky sure is um.. lucky to have a new home.

Animal testing is a terrible idea; they get all nervous and give the wrong answers.

Thanks for the warm welcome! It looks like I'm destined to make every n00b mistake on this trip. Today I gave up and yanked out Lucky's filter, and then Petco went and sold me an Aqua Fern which is, interestingly enough, not an aquatic plant. Well, I'm $2.50 poorer but a good deal wiser now as I consider my next move.

Hopefully my LFS will have some plants for me to buy. I'd rather not pay $39 or so in shipping for $8 in plants. But Lucky is enjoying the aqua fern for now. Hopefully I can get it replaced before it starts to croak.

Petsmart has lots of plants. Make sure you don't buy any labeled "semi-aquatic" tho

Lesson learned. I'm hoping to find some java moss and anacharis. Reportedly they're about impossible to kill and the anacharis will soak up ammonia. I've been pretty aggressive with the water changes while I wait for my water testing kit to show up, I could do with a few less changes. They're destroying his bubble nests, I don't think he approves.

Good luck with the plants! I'm just getting into them myself. I'm sure your fish would love some java moss and anacharis
