Hello! New member here :)
Hello, betta community! I guess I'll introduce myself.
I'm Lindsey, a fairly new fish keeper who just started college last August.
There was a point in time where I begged my parents to let me have a fish, because there was no other pet in the household. My parents always said no because we had bad experiences with goldfish when I was super little. Well, as soon as I moved into my dorm room for the year, I told my roommate that we were going to get a betta. We ended up getting Hades, a tiny dragon scale crowntail. He was named Hades because we passed a bicycle accident on the way home from the pet store (roommates name, not my idea). Unfortunately, he only lived for about 2 and a half weeks. I think he may have been sick when we got him, because we tried everything we could at the time to get him better, but he ended up with dropsy one night and had passed by the next morning. My roommate and I were devastated; I felt awful because he was my first betta.
And then comes along Otis. Otis was actually chosen by my roommates mother. She felt bad as well, so she bought him. While we were looking at bettas, my roommate and I were arguing over whether to get a red or blue betta (our favorite colors), and since Otis was red and blue, he was chosen. He was probably the feistiest fish in the store. He would not hold still in his cup. He must had been excited to be finally going home.
And that brings us to today. Otis has been happy and healthy for 5 months, and he's still going strong. He's as feisty as ever.
I think for a beginner, I'm getting the hang of this betta care. I did a lot of research over the summer before getting Hades or Otis, and I'm glad I did! During thanksgiving break, I was forced to leave Otis here in the dorm, like everyone else with fish. The day we came back I probably heard about 10 different stories about other people's fish dying over break (poor babies).
I'm still super willing to learn more about bettas, though, as I'm thinking about getting another one over the summer. I'm really excited. :)
Well, I think I'll stop there. It wasn't much of an introduction other than a story, but I hope you guys enjoyed, anyway. :)
Ta-ta! Hope you all have a lovely night/day!
