New betta keeper

Hi! I'm getting back into bettas after having 2 that lived for 3 years when I was little. I have a ten gallon tank and a heater. Is there any other supplies I need before I start to cycle?

Welcome back to the addiction! Well those are definitely two of the main things you need. Filter, Water conditioner such as prime, liquid water test kit, gravel vac, substrate, silk or real plants, a cave or two. Are you doing fish IN or fish LESS? If fish LESS then you need pure ammonia or a raw shrimp or something else as an ammonia source. Do you have an in tank thermometer? A quality food such as Omega One or New Life Spectrum pellets. Ummmmm, that's all I can think of right now. Good luck & ask more questions if need be.

Yes, I have a thermoniter, and I would like to do a fish in cycle. What kind of filter should I get? Thanks!

I have switched all my 10g & smaller tanks to sponge filters. Less maintenance & less water disturbance which a Betta likes. I had HOBs but didn't like them, lots of people use them, its a personal preference.

Ok. I'll buy a sponge filter. How long should bettas live? Is three years the average like I'd read on another website?

I believe the average life for a store bought Betta is 2-3 yrs, some longer.
