New to Bettas...and this forum!

Hello, my name is Connie, and I have my first Betta. I joined this forum to learn more about these great fish and how to care for him the best I can. I live in Arizona and have 3 aquariums now.

My betta is a Half Moon double tail. I have had community fish tanks in the past and got back into the hobby last August. I now have one 29 gallon community tank. And one 10 gallon Dwarf African Frog tank. And after researching online I now have my first Betta tank!

I have a 5.5 gallon TopFin kit. It came with a TopFin 10 filter, Incandescent lighted hood and thermometer. I still need to get a heater, but since I live in the Phx., AZ area where it is very hot in the summer months, my tanks don't need heaters until September through April. I am currently looking for a good heater for this tank.

I am not happy with this filter as I think it makes a bit too much movement in the tank for a betta. I want good filtration with little current. LOL!

I also am not crazy about this hood with the incandescent light. But I am finding it hard to find a good light for this tank. I would like to use a glass top with a light fixture, but so far no luck finding any for this size tank.

I need to add more silk plants for him to hide in. I have 2 plants and a bridge for him to hide under. But so far he doesn't hide under the bridge at all. The temperature is staying between 78 and 80 degrees as my house is a 78 degrees in the summer. This tank is located near a window (a warmer spot).

I do have questions about his behavior and things I could get for him, but I will go look for the appropriate thread. Don't want this to be a 'book'! LOL!

Thanks for letting me join! I need all the help I can get for my little guy!

Hello and welcome!!
There's a couple of good filter baffling ideas around. Like, I used a regular kitchen sponge for a while and kept it on my filter with elastic band. When I got tired of washing all the algae off it (This wouldn't happen in all tanks, I have an unstable tank with too much light) I cut out the plastic corner of my lettuce container and melted the corners down so they're not sharp and attached that to my filter. (attached)

Everybody has different methods and uses what works best for them, but you'll find this community a friendly one where you learn lots! I've been here for 2 years!

Thanks for the welcome!
Yep, love the silk plants. I just added a large one today and the tank looks so much better. My little guy is so curious about anything I put into the tank...isn't shy at all. Comes right over and investigates anything new. Isn't afraid of my hand in the tank at all.

I have already gotten him to nip at my finger tip when I put my finger just breaking the surface, and then I reward him with a Betta mini pellet. He did this twice in a row.....I didn't want to give him too many pellets since he had eaten 3 about an hour earlier for his dinner.
This little guy is fun!
