betta named archer

hello there everyone;

I just joined the forum and wanted to say howdy.

I recently got my first betta, his name is Archer. I'm a total noob at this whole fish thing. I read a few books on bettas, and on planted tanks, but I'm still a bit weary about what I'm doing. Any/all input would be appreciated.

Tank:
>5gal fluval spec.
>stock fluval filter and pump, although I cut two holes in the output tube to decrease the flow rate in the tank.
>heated to 79 degrees F (normal submersible heater)
>no other type of air stone or aeration
>no tankmates
>3 live plants from petco
>castle/house thing. Archer loves it but I'm afraid it will leach paint.
>parameters appear to be good, but the water is a bit cloudy.

Archer:
>he's blue with some red here and there...
>eating well on Hikari Betta Bio-Gold
>blood worms for treats

Archer seems happy to be out of that little pet store cup. He's pretty playful and I've spent hours just hanging with him.

Any advice on tankmates? I'd love a snail or a few shrimp? Unfortunately I live in an area without any sort of LFS. I'm a good 3 hours from any type of decent brick and mortar fish shop. Sometimes I make it to the city (where there's a LFS), but if I get any shrimp or a snail I'll likely mail order them.

Anyway, thanks for being a great community. Hope all is well and I'll keep doing my betta research.

Hello and welcome to you and Archer

A snail or two would be a fun addition to your tank (which is beautiful). If you don't want many many snails, you might want to consider the Nerite snail. There are some really pretty ones out there - check e-bay for good deals if that's something you want to consider.

And they won't reproduce in freshwater (even though they will lay eggs). Good luck!

Animal testing is a terrible idea; they get all nervous and give the wrong answers.
