Goldfish stocking question!

So it's been two weeks since I bought a goldfish for our new year. He's a little lion head and he lives in a 25 gallon by himself. Such a cutie too!

I know that each fancy goldfish needs at least 20 gallons, and each extra goldfish needs an extra 10. Is this because of sizing issues or filtering or what?

I'd love to be able to get him a goldfish buddy, but since I can't go any higher than 25 I have atm he'll be best off alone, right?

It's for both size and filtering issues. Goldfish get big and thick. They need a lot of room to turn and maneuver (they're clumsy). But the size recommendation is also there for the buffering capacity. Parameters change quickly in small tanks; the larger the volume of water, the more stable it will be and the more waste it will be able to dilute.

Until you are able to get a larger tank, it's probably best to leave him alone. If he's a little skittish, you can get him a mirror buddy. Just place a small or large mirror next to one side of the tank. It's really cute to see them snuggle up! :3

I hadn't even though of using a mirror, but of course I have a small one that I use to make my betta boys flare at sometimes. I'll try that then, thanks!
