Marineland H.O.T. Magnum filters?

Are they any good? For a 29 gallon? I find it interesting that it is in between a HOB and canister....Seems to have LOTS of media space for what it is...

I have one and I hate it. There's not a lot of space for media. I have it running on one of my 29 gallon QTs.

125 - BGK, chanchito cichlid, pictus cats, silver dollars, palmas bichir
125 - cichlids (severums, bolivian rams, chocolate), rainbows ( turquoise, red), loaches (angelicus, zebra, kuhli and horseface), plecos (BN, RL and clown), denison barbs, tiretrack eel, pearl gouramis, betta
90 - Congo tetras, african knife, upside down cats, spotted ctenopoma, kribensis, delhezzi bichir
2.5 - betta

It's not designed well. I don't like the intake, the outflow, the filter body. The intake is so short it's useless. Of course you can probably buy extensions. The outflow is too close to the surface and is in too fixed of a position. If the water level drops even slightly, it makes a lot of water noise. And the filter body. They have this stupid "cartridge" thing. I don't know, I've used a lot of different filters and love love LOVE my canisters, but that is not a filter that I would ever buy again.

Do you think an Aquaclear 70 would be better?

Yes - I'm a big fan of AC filters, as far as HOBs go. That's what I have on my other 29 and is what I used back when it was a community tank. It's quite a step up from the AC50.

Thanks. The AC 70 is cheaper than the H.O.T. Magnum anyway...

The HOT Magnum is designed as more of a piece of fishroom gear, meant to go from tank to tank for a quick cleanup. The long cord & power switch on the body, as well as the easy rim adjustment play into that. The pleated cartridge is junk, fill it with sponge for cleaning, or floss for polishing. Used in that manner it's a good piece of gear, doesn't seem to have the gasket leak problems I've encountered on the other magnums. I'd go with the mentioned AC for a filter you plan on leaving on the tank.
jaysee and Curiositykat like this.
