Java Loach stuck behind tank background :(

My newest tank addition, a Java Loach, jumped over my tank background and is now stuck behind it

I had plans to cover the back with mesh to prevent that from happening, but with the background installed for less than one day, the loach managed to jump over. The background is siliconed in place and cannot be pulled out again.

I've tried netting him but he is too fast.

He's not in danger back there but the situation is not ideal. I'd rather have him in a group of loaches in the front of the tank.

Do you all have any ideas for helping him out?

Here's a photo to give you and idea of background placement:

The gap between the background and back of the tank is like 1.5"

Yikes

Is the gap completely full of water or just a few inches? Is it possible to fill it completely so that you can manipulate him to the top where you can grab him?

Silly fish!

Animal testing is a terrible idea; they get all nervous and give the wrong answers.

that might work! It's almost full to the top. I'll try to add more water, pull out the filter etc., and see if it helps.

You can also try positioning his favorite foods at the top of the water so that he has to come and get them. That might help you catch him...

I took some deep, calming breaths and after 20 minutes of fishing, managed to net him :D He is now back in the front with his loach buddies. And the top is sealed off!!!!

Phew! I'm glad you were able to get him out.
