Anacharis Death

My Anacharis died in my 5.5gal betta tank and caused a green water explosion! I don't want to change out my whole tank but the 25-50% water changes aren't doing it and the gravel vac is having a hard time getting all that nasty leaf gunk up. Halp.

you can try some amano shrimp or take the anacharis out and put it in dechlorinated water. while you are cleaning the algae use Excel in the tank and all lights off for 2-3 days,a lso using elbow grease and a glass/acrylic safe scrubber will definitely help.

Excel kills the anacharis.

Thanks

Ugh, I hear you! Never doing anacharis ever again. Do you have a filter? If so, I can tell you want I did.

Dont give up on it! My first batch died, but my second order is really healthy. Ordered from Tricker.

It supposedly doesn't like water over 79ish degrees, and Excel fertilizer melts it.

I do have a filter, albeit a small one. The betta doesn't like too much pull.

Thank you but I think I am done with Anacharis for now. Too much of a mess! The other plants seem to be doing well, especially in my goldfish's tank.

Ok, here's how I got rid of it:

-By hand, remove as much of the solid/intact pieces, as gently as possible.
-The above step didn't help much, so lots of soggy pieces where left behind, so next, I left the pieces settle. Then, I took a turkey baster and sucked up as much as possible.
-Let it settle again and then cleaned off the filter intake.
-Rinse and repeat the turkey-baster/ settle/ clean the intake process, over the course of about 5 days, doing it once a day.

There was a few bits left, and I'm sure if I really agitated my gravel, it would stir up more, but it's no noticeable anymore. Mollies and stuff might eat it too.

HTH!

Anacharis and Betta do not co-exist, IMHO. One thrives at temperature BELOW 75F, and the other thrives at 78F or HIGHER.

My Anacharis thrives in my Gold fish tank (without a heater).

With that said, the reason of the Algae, IMHO, has nothing to do with the dead anacharis, more to do with the Nitrate level in the tank. Just keep doing your daily 25% water change, siphon the dead plant out and use a snail to clean them out altogether.
