Well I've always been under the impression it stood for 'Natural Planted Tank', which included the use of soil and sort of followed the Walstad method.

However, many members here seem to call any planted tank a NPT.

I also understand that NPT means "natural planted tank" that uses soil and live plants.
I think there is some debate as to whether or not a true NPT can use a filtration system or not. I use one in mine and still call it an NPT.

In the sticky, OFL doesn't recommend not using a filter in any NPT over 10 gallons.

Yes, I saw that. I have seen on other sites where people state that a true NPT does not have a filter. However, I am on board with OFL that a filter should be used in anything bigger than 10 gallons.

To me, a planted tank and a Natural Planted Tank are two different things - an NPT is soil-based, Walstad method, as LBF said.

I have to agree "NPT" sounds more like non planted tank... xD But it is natural planted tank. I will be using a muffled filter for my 30, when I decide to naturally plant it.

Breed for the breed, not for the money; the words any REAL breeder would understand.

You must know nothing in order to know all, for all is nothing and nothing is for all.
