question about trimming stem plants

i need some help with trimming my stem plants. I know that you can cut stem plants and replant them because I've done this. my replant is growing great but the original plant isn't. I don't know what I've done wrong. Is there a specific place to cut the plant? thanks for any help...

sometimes the old stem just is that, old and needs to be pulled up and replaced. its normal

what I find works best is to cut the plant just below a leaf node, and then to trim back the leaves and place that node in the dirt. with some nodes they might be producing roots already! and those are prime candidates!
