Planted tank without fish?

Since Petco is having their tank sale starting Sunday I am thinking about get getting a 20 long just for plants. The purpose is to have some to sell and reuse in my tanks that have not been in another tank thereby preventing cross contamination. Can I do this successfully with fertilizer?

I have a grow out tank especially for that reason also. I just dose NPK every other day then trace ferts on the other days, water changing once a week. I use recycled aquasoil as the substrate. The plus is, if I see unwanted snails in there I can dose pp and not worry about overdosing since there's no fish in there.

Oh yeah I can pump co2 in there like there's no tommorrow.
