API layerite vs CaribSea floramax

I recently got a 20 gallon long tank so of course I'm going to plant it and start a sorority. But before we get all the lovely fish I've got to get substrate and plants. I'm thinking of doing gravel with a plant supplement under it to help my sword plants. So far API and floramax both seem to be available and claim to be pretty much the same product, but they also have very different 'potencies' so to speak. Floramax can be used in place of gravel, so it says, while layerite seems to be needed in much smaller quantities under the gravel. Anybody have experience with these products? I'd like to hear how either or both of them worked out for other forum members before I make a purchase.

Use laterite under the floramax.

Everything happens for a reason, but the reason isn't always good.

Mixing the two, or just using a plant substrate vs using soil?

I think I'm going to go with the API layerite and black gravel at this point.
