What plants would be ideal for this setup?

I planted my tank about two and a half months ago, but didn't provide anything other than lighting for them so they slowly died. I'm going to replant and take better care of them this time.

I have about 2.5wpg of lighting, I'll be adding liquid ferts weekly, and dosing Excel daily. (I am flexible about this, though). I'm curious about DIY Co2 and it sounds like less work than Excel, but I've heard that you can kill your fish if you mess it up.

I am planning on using gravel, but if there's a better option for $20 or under, I'd love to hear it. (it's a 10 gallon tank)

Where i live I can get a 20lb bag of aquatic fertilizer for $20. Then I would cover it with a cm thick layer of gravel to keep it down.

You can get a bag of Miracle grow organic potting mix for about 3.50 at wal-mart and a bag of Black Diamond Blasting sand from any tractor supply type store for about 8 to 9 dollars. All my tanks are using this as substrate and my plants grow like crazy.

I'm curious about this but I've looked all over the place where I live and I can't find the Miracle Grow.

I've also heard that you need MTS to aerate the soil? I can't really do that because I have Assassin Snails.

I have MTS in one tank but that's it. I've never had an issue with any of my soil tanks at all but if you are worried about just take a stick and poke the substrate every couple of weeks.

That's all it takes?! I can handle that. I could even do it during my weekly maintenance.

^ that's what I do, I don't have mts right now but I want some :)

Good starter plants are water wisteria, hornwort, and anacharis, it's pretty hard to go wrong with those, some slower growing, but nice looking plants are java fern and java moss. I even have a couple of swords in my 10 but they do need a good substrate, so soil or root tabs is the way to go ^^
