it's "cotton candy" for snails and shrimp.

but if that answer does not suffice for you, the driftwood is releasing sugars from within its tissue and a fungus is capitalizing on that sugar. it will disappear once when there's no more sugar to be exploited from the wood. usually runs a course of 1 month max, even less if you have nerites and amanos.

I had the same growth on my drift wood for about a month or so, I just took the drift wood out of the tank, gave it a light cleaning with a tooth brush and put it back in.

It looks kinda nasty, but is pretty much harmless.

I've had this problem for quite a while with my driftwood. What I did was remove it from the tank, chuck it in the sink and pour boiling water over it a couple of times (it was far too big to fit in any pot of mine). This cleaned off most of the gross bacteria stuff. It's growing back a little on the driftwood but it's no longer completely covered in it.

Warning though, it feels and smells foul out of water.
