Hi! So thank you to everyone who replied to my thread about planting my tank. I purchased a java fern attached to an organic coconut husk on sunday from amazon and it arrived today! Yay! It is alive and I see no snails or worms, so I'm happy. I currently have it soaking in a kritter keeper I use for travel. I have some questions. First, how long should I let it soak for? Do I need to condition the water that's its in? Second, it said to trim brown leaves. Some of the leaves have brown spots but aren't completely dead. I'm attaching pictures. Do I cut these off or is it okay to leave them and see if they do better? I really don't want to lose a ton of leaves! Sorry the pictures are blurry. You can see the brown spots sort of

UPDATE: I trimmed off two of the leaves, the rest had pretty small spots so I wasn't too concerned. I rinsed it a lot and decided to add it in! I also got a mini siphon in the mail today and decided to try using that. Water changes are so much easier with one! I want to re-arrange I think, but I also want to change out my substrate so I might just wait.

Thanks! I think I want to rearrange and move the plant to the other side but I need to figure all that out. Too much work for now. I might be headed to the pet store on Friday and if I do I'm gonna check our their plants and see if I can find a nice one. Trying to move to all live plants!

With Java Ferns, you'll get little brown spots on the leaves, those are spores and they're ok. You'll also get a bit of browning on leaves where babies are forming, they'll form leaves and put out roots. The browning you'll want to trim off is when a whole leaf is dying back, and it will look pretty much like when a terrestrial plant dies back. Java ferns are easy to take care of, I think you'll really enjoy it!

Yeah, I'm really happy with my purchase and how it's attached to coconut husk. Easy to move! I wanna get some driftwood. But I think I'm gonna wait (I'm asking for a fluval spec V for christmas possibly or a 10 gallon!) and then I'd be able to learn aquascaping
