I have been using 100% cotton thread with success. You need to use a lot to bind it as in 15-20 loops. The hardest ones to bind are java moss as the rhizome and the space between each node/branch is close. I use a tweezer to navigate the threads and tie the hariy roots to the rock/driftwood in between each node to ensure success.

The best ones to bind are those with long hairy roots, so I'd learn not to trim them but to bind them wrapping them around the rock/driftwood to aid with bonding.
