Well, my whole life I've been a nut over making sure everything has a name! I have 7 Bettas in total right now.
Pharaoh was named for his large long veil tail appearance and he really fits his name! He's definitely a leader.
Nazgul was named by my boyfriend after LOTR. He is a marbled blue and white betta half moon with the longest flowing white fins.
Mauve was my first betta in my new house. He is dark purple with a lighter mauve color surrounding the dark purple. He's a dragonscale crowntail. His full name was Tom Mauvolo Riddle
Lilico is my one-eyed dragonscale adoption betta. Beautiful lavender in color and small and feisty!
Crimsyn aptly named for his bright fire red appearance. He has a handicap where he can't stay swimming for very long. He lays on his betta bed all day and chills.
Mulligan is my show betta as I like to call him. A silvery blue body with a fantastic yellow on his half moon tail. The tail is surrounded by a deep ebony color, making his tail resemble a pencil shaving. Named a pirate name.
Last but not least is Looksee. my genderless baby betta. Named from a song, he/she is becoming red and blue!
I'll do just the betta names:
Mushu - My fiance named him after the dragon in Mulan
Skerries - Series of small islands
Archipelago - other series of small island
Hu - Thai for "ears"
Lillith - Consort of Diablo
Diablo - Red and Black fish, reminded me of the video game
Don Quixote - scraggly and skinny, and the name was reaffirmed after he took to flaring at Mikel lol
Dory - She seemed to "forget" who she'd just flared and postured at, and she's blue.
Takhisis - she reminds me of a dragon, and that was the only dragon name I could think of.
Oddball and Sedna, who are still with Aemaki: Oddball was the "odd fish out" with a split ventral, until Aemaki found another girl with split ventrals, Sedna is the eskimo goddess of sea cretures essentially.
Mardi: because I got him on Mardi gras, and some of my friends suggested the name marty so I decided it would be a cute name for him. (his middle name is moe because that's what my dad wanted to name him)
Mason: I've just always liked the name Mason and it sounded good with Mardi (they were gonna go into a divided tank). His middle name is midnight because his blue reminded me of midnight.
I think all my bettas might have M names just because I like them!!
Mr. Violet: His predecessor was named Violetspark (My very, very first betta who died just after a week I got him) and so my current betta name was in memory of him.
Whatever hits me. Some are from TV shows, some refer to color and others refer to personality. For example, Marty had silver rings around his eyes so he looked like the actor Marty Feldman  Turns out it was just stress induced color and now his eyes are dark. The name stuck.
Very cool on where all your names are coming from. I'm not half as creative with names, so I've kind of decided for myself where all my betta names are going to come from (what can I say? I'm something of a theme namer I guess!).
Currently I have two bettas myself: Leroy and Wrynn. A few short days ago it would have been three, but poor Jenkins has since passed on.
...And by the way...all the names come from one of my personal game vices...World of Warcraft.
Not all our betta names fit our theme. Some we had before we decided to names them after mythological figures, others have been adopted & get to keep the name they come with. We (my daughter & I) decided to go with mythology because she has been interested in Greek mythology since the 3rd grade (freshman now) and has started studying other branches of mythology, also because we'd have a large selection of names and can still try and fit the name to personality or looks (example, Ra got his name because of his suntail trait, Hades is dark, Helios is a pretty yellow boy, & Prometheus is fiery orange)
Ranger - Named after Lone Ranger commercial that I saw right before leaving for PetSmart.
Marius - Suggested by a member here to match Eponine
Eponine - Named after character from Les Mis. She is feisty like Eponine so that's how she got her name.
Neptune - I like Roman and Greek mythology, so i went with one that made sense
Gerard - Named after Gerard Butler, I went from seeing Phantom of the Opera (my other favorite musical next to Les Mis.. although I prefer the stage version of both) to PetCo because the movie theater was close, saw him and took him home. This was in 2004 or 2005.
Bob - Named by a co-worker who said all fish need to be named Bob. This was 2004 as well.
Cow - I wanted oddest name I could think of. This was 2002-2003.
So, it looks like I mostly turn to popular culture and/or other people.
A bit off topic but I can't help it... I got so excited when I saw the name Eponine pop up, and then Marius. I love Les Miserables, my favorite musical hands down.
I currently have 2 bettas, my mom named one Shuckey, because she heard the name on a show and liked it. My other betta that I just got os named Selene, Greek goddess of the moon.
Shuckey is blue and red.
Selene has white fins and a charcoal colored body.
All mine are named after the peeps on Duck Dynasty. I have Willie, Jase, Jep, Missy (who it turns out is actually a boy...) Jessica, Korie, and our newest is little Sadie.
I wanted something pedigree sounding for the first betta I've had in years... so I thought and thought...
and decided to go with some Japanese (Murasaki no Ryuu = purple dragon... saki just to not have to say it all every time, hahaha)
My husband named his next fish sushi because he's a jokster and thought "saki and sushi" sounded yummy  Shisu just to play on "sushi" since he took his tank when he passed away.
Soren for one of my favorite movies, and his tank mates got named to match....
and Slash from guns'n'roses because my husband didn't like anything else.
mine are lame haha, usually based on their colour or what they are eg, blackie, pinky, runty.... Ones called saber because she has a mutated anal fin giving her ahuge spike at the front. Only my favourites get names
My first little Betta boy was named Link after the video game character. My current 3 little boys are named Peanut,Button & Piglet which are names I just think are cute, like them.
I generally have three places I pick from: Artist whom I like, Astrological things, and Marvel Mutants (yeah I'm a nerd)
The first three were not from the above list.
Gallifrey - a red CT named after the Doctors home planet from Doctor Who
Scorch - a red VT because....well I accidentally burned Gallifrey because I was very unknowing at that point.
Stony - red/white/blue double tail whom we considered calling Chop Suey (my dad accidentally turned the filter on not realizing Scorch's filter didn't have the basket thing on so it sucked him up....)
And then the rest are pretty much from my first list:
Rembrandt (Remmy) - artist
Mattise (Maddie) - artist
Aurora - astro.
Stardust - astro.
Phoenix - Marvel
Mystique - Marvel
Raven - Marvel
Others that don't fit:
Ditto (he looks almost exactly like Remmy but a double tail, hence Ditto)
Little Blue (because she's little and she's blue)
Cherry (thought she was sweet like cherry pie)
I named my boy Miles after Miles Austin my favorite Dallas Cowboys player. He is a very pretty blue and white which also happens to be the Cowboys colors for the most part.
I get my names from all over....I actually keep a list of "possible" betta names. However, I don't actually name ALL my fish, mostly just my favs. (I have over 80 now, after all...lol)
i like a variety of pop culture names for pets, with a preference for the strange. space ghost is obviously named after space ghost (coast to coast!), same with his surviving amano buddy, zorak. for months i've had it in my head that the next betta i get, i want him to look like a namor (the submariner, from marvel comics), since male bettas tend to be imperious little guys. if i ever got a female i'd name her moon unit (frank zappa's daughter's name), because i will literally name anything that's even vaguely female moon unit. if i had ten female bettas they'd all be named moon unit. i wish i was named moon unit.
I'm a bit (read that as major) book worm, so whenever I come across a word I like or a particularly cool character name I'll add it to my list. When ever I get a new betta I'll scroll through the list to find one that fits them. The end up have odd names, but I don't think they really mind. Currently I have Vertigo, Kai (from The Water Wars by Cameron Stracher), and Siege from my list. Also, I have Anonymous who got his name when I claimed him from my sister who couldn't even care enough to name the poor guy.
I considered naming my newest boy Canton Delaware, since I got him on the day that the Silence fell! (Seriously, all of a sudden I had a 10g in my room, and tally marks on my arms!)
Can I say I love you? Haha, that's amazing btw. I completely missed the day! Which makes sense....I also kept forgetting a lot that day.....
