Thanks! Unfortunately I'm low on funds ATM so I can't really afford a well bred betta. The female will share a divided 10 gal tank, it's heated & filtered, so she will have 5 gallons to her self. Thanks!

Hello! You don't happen to be trying to find a female betta a home, do you? I'm looking to get a female betta (not for breeding). I've had too many sick bettas come from pet stores and I'm hoping to get a betta that has been taken care of... I know you live fairly close so lmk. :)

I have used the Quikrete brand of both pool filter and play sand for my cap over the soil in my NPT's without any problems.....Most of the sands are inert and safe to use regardless of brand.

I breed in a 1g regular (15 x 15 x 25cm), 1g shallow (30 x 30 x 10cm), up to 50g (120 x 40 x 40 cm) - ALL depending on the male I'm breeding. I would use 1g for small young males and troubled males (less active). I use bigger tanks for regular healthy males that could literally swim around non stop all day and for half giants (I use 3-50g for half giants).

The depth also depends on the health. But usually I breed in regular depth ( as deep as I usually keep the tank). Sometimes bigger tanks are only filled half way. I've also bred in 2" water in the 1g shallow, 3-4" water in my 7g round tub..... all works.

So yes, your plan would work. IMO you don't need a divider but it won't hurt using them either. Without dividers may take longer but definitely safer for female since she has more space to avoid the male.

The Amazon sword will out grow a 100gal tank in time...lol...they get huge with an even bigger root system, however, they grow slow and a small sword in a 10 or 20gal will be fine...maybe 3-5 years-depending on the nutrients in the soil.....I keep mine in check by pinching the larger leaves on a regular basis...It should be fine in your 20gal NPT for awhile at least....Be sure to keep the crown above the substrate when you plant it...better too shallow than too deep.....also, trim the roots before you plant it too....

Dwarf gourami are like betta in that it's one male to a tank. But you can have an additional two females in there. Just make sure you have plenty of floating plants. They will also get along well with peaceful schooling fish. I have a gourami and cardinal tetra in with my kuhli loaches. So cute! ^_^

I haven't even seen them at my Petco! I live in the middle of nowhere lol!
For a 30 gal, you've got some neat options. Some of the tetra like bloodfin tetra and pristella tetra will work in almost all water types; most of the small gourami will, too. If you've got hard water you could experiment with livebearers such as endlers, swordtails, and splitfins (I think guppies are just too overdone). For soft water you'll have a whole bunch of tetra options as well as kuhli loaches and many species of corydoras. A 30 gal is a great first community tank. My only community tank is a 29 gal. I love it! Small enough that water changes don't take 2 hours (like my goldfish tank) and large enough to have two large schools of fish.

I've seen panda moors! They are really pretty. I'd like to have a panda oranda one day. But anything aside from your basic fancy goldfish is hard for me to find around here.
Ya. Goldfish have it pretty bad. They're seen as "easy fish" which is sad because it means so many languish in tiny bowls. A good minimum for 4 goldfish is a 55 gallon tank. I'm still looking for one more goldfish to fill mine. For 5 goldfish I would go up to a 75 gallon. I would also use canister filters. I'm getting away with two HOB's on my 55 gallon, but if I had the money I would upgrade to a powerful canister filter.

Aww thanks! I'm enjoying writing it. ^-^
In theory a ~30 gal tank is large enough for two goldfish, but that would be maxing out the biological capacity as well as the space. Some breeds like oranda and black moors would get too large to be placed in a tank of that size with another goldfish (I've seen some monster oranda that take up a whole 30 gal by themselves). Unfortunately there is no way to tell how large a goldfish will grow; some breeds have general expectations, but individual fish like to break those ;P. A single goldfish in that tank would be better, but you would need pretty heavy filtration (still try to find a breed that will stay small-ish like ryukin or ranchu). I would skip the HOB and go right for a canister. Live plants will also help. You're also going to need to do a lot of water changes. So to sum everything up, yes, a goldfish could work in that tank, but it would have more maintenance needs than a regular tank.

The pool filter sand I use-I got at Home depot Quikrete 50lb bag for under $8.00.

I also buy the 50lb bags of the small diameter pea type gravel from Home Depot or Lowes that I use in my aquarium-its a natural collect rock used for landscaping/gardens-Is inert so it doesn't change water prams-you just want to watch out for dyed rocks and rock that can change water prams...
