Hey waterdog, hope I don't seem like a stalker, but I saw that you posted in a thread that you don't believe in a fishless cycle. I find that interesting, becuase it seems like a lot of people feel the opposite way. Could you tell me more about your opinion on this? Thanks :)

Bwah sorry I just read your article and it said to remove the airline and tubing...But can you leave the rest of the sponge filter assembled while squeezing it out? (like leave the sponge on the part the sponge surrounds that is connected to the base?)

When you squeeze out your sponge filters in the old tank water, do you need to disassemble it? Or can you just take the hard plastic tube off and leave the rest together, including the airline tubing?

Thanks for the comment on my little female. She was my first Betta (and the start of my Betta-addiction :)). I really like your sponge filter thread. I don't know why it didn't get stickied. Did any of the mods explain why?

Thanks wd! Also, how exactly does a check valve work? Does it stop any water from going through it? Or in the event of back-siphoning, will a little bit of water drip through?

Ok so I hate you for having the 5-gallon hex that I have wanted like forever. Reason unknown :-? And no, I am not your wife in disguise. Maybe some of us wives think alike ;-). I may meander to my local Petsmart at lunchtime and look at the pretty Fluval and the not-so-pretty-but-more-financially-responsible Marineland 4 gallon glass tank :p

Racoon it doesn't take much. Most sponge filters you buy will say right on the box what size tank they will filter. If you look at the pictures in my tanks alb um you will see a flat sponge I use in my 2.5. It will filter up to 5 gallons. Most of then, flat or upright, are easily hid by plants in a 5 gallon tank.

Hi. I seen your post about sponge filters. Very awesome info! I'm looking into setting one up. With the sponge, is there a formula for how much surface area of sponge per gallon of tank? I got a 5.5 gal. With a single female betta. I want to grow enough BB to keep the water good but my tank can be viewed from all sides so I don't really want the sponge to be to big and destracting if you know what I mean.

My 75 is drilled. I absolutely love having a sump. I made it by splitting a 35 using plexiglass dividers siliconed in. The water dumps into a open area, then down through 5 layers of filter media, then up through 5 lbs. of lava rocks, then down over charcoal, then to the return pump. I also have a 5 gallon pal tied to it with tubing and a float valve for automatic top off. It increases water volume and airation.

Hi water dog, noticed in your siggy, you have a 35 gal sump for your tropical, just wondered how well it works for you is you tank drill or hang on overflow?
