You haven't posted in a while, but I see you still check in occasionally. How've you been?

Wanted to thank you for all the good info about cycling.

That sounds fantastic, Thunder. Its always great to see that curiosity and the joy of learning are not yet dead on us. I admire you for it :)

About a week after I read "knowledge is power" in grade school it occurred to me that lots of knowledge is power. Maybe not in the "rule nations" sense but its worked out that the only repair man I've ever called in my life was an electrician to install my breaker box.

That stance just leads to a hobby of learning how things work, not only the individual products but the systems and whole macro-nic structure of the application of such systems.

If we stick with the knowledge we know we never gain an inch, so I explore my hobbies.

I do have a large selection of Marineland products as well as an assortment of small tank equipment but just owning them would do me no good without the technical knowledge I've gained from never turning away from something I don't understand.

So in a sense you hit the nail on the head, I am more a technologist than anything else. I tend to be a genius at nothing, but tenacious at exploring anything.

I can't remember many toys that I had when young that I didn't take apart to learn how they worked. Thus to keep the toys I learned to sew, solder, woodwork, paint, and repair both on the small and large scale.

I can't claim to be a natural genius in this regard... My mother has a Master's degree in art education from an era when that meant she learned to do all those things and my father has worked everything from watching radar for the Air Force and electroplating nuclear device components through to one day in scrubs he laid on his back under an ER-OR table performing the second life-saving operation in the room.

I have two rather complex parents who both had already amassed a huge base of knowledge in separate categories, it was quite a scramble to keep up with both.
I may never actually catch up, trying to hit a receding target on the run is difficult.

I can say that I'm not a natural at anything, I've just developed an ability to learn on-the-fly that's served me well in more than 160 different jobs and nine hobbies.

Aquariums is the oddest thing. I think my liking of them had to wait for the industry to get complex for me to be interested in having one. When I was two years old I'd be sat on the bottom step for time-out and a tank was there. In 2006 I stopped and looked at a power filter for the first time in a walmart. Its clear the fish alone aren't enough to keep me interested, but the black plastic things are my pets too so it works out. I may tire of, or not have enough time for, fish and aquarium gear at some point but I think my biggest joy in life is helping people get to where they're going.

Or maybe it's shouting "nobody expects the Spanish inquisition!"
One day I'll find out, or leave it to my son to learn.

It often brings me happiness and redeems my opinion of humanity when I see the little tell-tale evidence of brilliance OR perseverance in the design of the products we buy and use. I run into so many people every day now who couldn't make toast without a hundred years of technological support. I use a frying pan and like it.

Hey, Thunder, how do you know so much about the tech-y aspects of tanks and filters? Its pretty neat ;) Do you work with technology in that regard, or do you own many different types of filters, tanks, etc?
