so i want to move my little guy to a 2.5-3 gal tank but i want real plants and preferably no filter (might not even need a heater, except in dead of winter)
so here goes:
what tank style/shape/make do your betta's like
what plants are good i have a Anacharis already in his little 1 gal tank.
I would def. recommend a heater still because even though the temp in the water is hot enough it does fluctuate without a heater and at night it gets colder especially if you have a light and turn it off. Temperature fluctuations are not healthy for fish and in the long run it will pay off to have a heater
For plants I recommend low light plants unless you plan on getting a good light with proper kelvin measurements which I don't know the exact...
How is your anacharis doing in the one gallon? Mine unfortunately died because the light wasn't strong enough... hornwort did pretty good for a while but soon died too. I now have java fern and java moss since they are more low light to no light plants
I second the heater. They're tropical fish and imo/e they need it.
I think my anubias is doing the best in my tank. It's after sprouting like 5 extra leaves and a lot of root/rhizome.
for the moment the plant is doing great, lots and lots of natural light...i'm looking for a heater ... while finsgerald seems to like it .. the water is a bit cold right now. down to 72!
Im new to plants too. I went to petco the other day. They have plants in containers that have gel at bottom. Do you remove gel before putting plant in tank or do you put the whole thing in tank? :-?
i think the gel is the stuff that you use in your patio pots to retain water so i would GUESS no.. i got my plant from my local fish store for WAY less then petco... the plant in my photo was 3.99 for all of it.
When I moved my betta to a larger tank ( 5-gallon) I got him a java fern and an antler fern. The antler fern has long roots which I attach to the bottom of the tank by putting gravel over them. Many of its leaves float on the top of the water. "Pud" loves them and builds bubble nests under them.
The antler fern grows like crazy and I have to prune it every other week.
Having the larger tank and live plants has made "Puds" life better. Algae does grow on the sides of the tank, but I just wipe it clean when weekly 50 percent water changes, and monthly complete water changes.
