I have a 2.5 gallon tank and I want/ think i should clean his tank twice a week. i just filled it sunday, so i'll clean it every Wednesday/ Sunday. Anyway, I wanted to know if you guys thought this was a good plan for cleaning his tank. Since I live in college dorm I don't have a lot of resources for him, but this is what i plan to do:
1. empty tank
2. fill it with hot water and let it sit for a few mins to kill any harmful bacteria
3. let it dry
4. clean his toys with hot water
5. fill the tank up and put his toys in it
6. put in the water conditioner and let it sit for 3 hours so the water adjusts to the room temp.
7. then i'll slowly every ten mins acclimate him to the water, and then just let him slid into the tank.
At this time I do not have a heater for him, or a thermometer or aquarium salt. I hope to get these things either this week or this weekend.
Any tips you can give me or insight would be good thanks. :welldone:
*Also i want to try to prevent any fish diseases like Ich, and what not. So any tips for that would be great!*
In a unfiltered 2.5gal tank without live plants=twice weekly water changes...1-50% and 1-100%.....
If filtered-twice weekly 50%...1-50% water only and 1-50% to include the substrate by vacuum or stir and dip method-be sure and give the filter media a rinse/swish in old tank water a couple of times a month
The dechlorinator make the water fish safe and ready to use on contact
Try to keep the water temp within a few degrees between new and old water for water changes so not to temp shock the fish...
You may or may not need a heater, however, its a good idea to have one on hand...your goal is to maintain a somewhat stable water temp in the 76-80F range
You do need a thermometer to monitor the tank temp and to use to check the temp of the replacement water used for water changes....
Good quality varied diet fed in small frequent meal
my tank doesn't have a filter and it has no live plants and i don't understand by 50% water changes. do i tank fifty percent of his water out and put fresh water in? i was just going to do 100 percent changes twice a week...and i feed him once a day 2 little fish pellets.
You should do 50% water changes just like what oldfishlady said and yes take 50% of the water out.You should feed your fish twice everyday(Each time 2 or 3 pellets)
For a 2.5 gal you can just cup your little guy and then carry your tank to the sink and dump out 50% of the water. Then add water back in while using water conditioner. Personally I just check my thermometer right before a water change. I dump out the water and then adjust the tap to within 1 degree of the original water temp and add water conditioner. If you do it this way, you won't have to let it sit for 3 hours. Of course you'll always need to float him and acclimate him before putting him back in the tank. Especially when doing 100% changes. Also, you don't want to use AQ salt on a regular basis. It can cause internal organ damage over long term use. AQ salt is good to have on hand when treating diseases, etc. for no more than 10 to 14 day treatment plans.
I just changed his water today, and I acclimated him to the new water for 30 mins before putting him back in his tank. I usually like to do 100 percent water changes twice a week. right now he's just swimming around, he's pretty active, he doesn't seem to stop moving.
