What size piece of an IAL should I be putting in a 2.5g tank? I guessed a 2"x2" square, but I really don't know.
How often should I change it out? I have heavily planted tanks. Should I just leave the old one in there to break down, or should I remove all the bits of the old ones?
I'll do a whole leaf for my 2.5g and it colors the water nicely. Since I don't have my home 2.5g tank with substrate, just floaters, I'll take my leaf out when it's gooey.
I have a similar bare-bottom setup with floating plants. If, a day after my weekly water change, my water doesn't get as dark as I want, I'll replace the IAL. Sometimes weekly, sometimes every other week.
I have a 3 gal hospital tank with the floor totally covered with IAL. I just let them degrade all the way. It keeps the water pretty dark, but my sick fish like it that way. In my other tanks, I take the leaves out when they go gooey, as was said, or when the snails and shrimp eat them.
