When I swish my filter media in old tank water, I just swish it in the bucket I am siphoning the old tank water into while I'm doing a water change. This is how it's supposed to be done, right?
Some people use a vac system called a Python if they have a larger tank - it hooks up to the faucet and drains directly into the sink and down the drain. There may also be times when you need to clean the filter but aren't doing a water change.
What I was mainly worried about is if it's okay to swish the filter media during the water changes. I was concerned about it causing a spike/mini cycle...
EDIT: ...because I vacuum the gravel when I do water changes.
Yes, it's fine to do that. Just swish it around in the bucket your emptying the water into as long as the bucket isn't used for anything thing else (cause you don't want to get soap or chemical residue on your filter).
