Betta in the dark?

Antione seems to be more active when my bedroom light is on but his tank light is off. Is it possible that his light is too bright for him? When it's on he just likes to chill near the water surface. But he swims around more right before bed

My guy doesn't like the light either. I don't have a light for him yet but he is more active when my bedroom light is on and he freaks out with the flashlight

It is probable that his light is too bright. You could try getting some floating plants (either real or fake) to dim the light a bit. Wild betta live under a cover of floating plants. This might help him perk up a little more.

Well if he's hanging at the surface I don't think it's too bright. Maybe he's going up for warmth.

thats what confused me. he seems more active in dim light but hes always near it when i see him with the light on. i have a thermometer outside my tank that reads a consistent 76. i think thats on the low end if i remember correctly, but im afraid its reading it lower since its on the outside. maybe he just gets excited about the change?

By thermostat do you mean a stick on thermometer? Or is that the air temp?

Those stick-on thermometers aren't the greatest. They aren't accurate, so his behaviour could be tied to a change in temperature as lights can heat up the tank a bit.

Bettas are more adapted to the darker water of their origins. Use indian almond leaves to darken the water and greatly improve the health of your fish.

My betta is active whether the light is on or off. Though I notice when I turn his tank light on, he gets very ancy and aggressive. he charges at the fake plant and flares his fins out and stays swimming against the walls of the tank. I think he sees his reflection as a threat. I don't like seeing him all angry so I leave his light off since hes always in a lit area.

Its a shame to hear about that thermometer because I also have the outside stick on. I wish I would've found this site before I listened to petsmart as theyre the ones who recommended that thermometer
