I personally have a Hydro sponge filter in my 5 gallon, it is rated for up to 10 gallons. It is very quiet and they are supposed to be great for growing the helpful bacteria.

It runs on an air pump and you can adjust the flow. It is safe since there is nothing for the betta to harm himself on.

Sponge filters are very good, I agree with that.

I use an Aquaclear, they make one for up to 20 gallons. It has adjustable flow so it should be fine. I always like to over filter rather than under filter so I really suggest it. It also has 3 different types of filter media. So if you do replace something, which I don't recommend unless it us falling apart, you can do so in stages so your cycle doesn't get undone

I've read that when replacing the sponge part of a sponge filter, you can wring the water from the old one out and soak it up into the new one. This will help transfer the bacteria. The sponges are supposed to last a long time though. >> At least this is what I have read!

I have the same filter that it seems you have. its safe as far as i can tell, and i got a baffle i made from a water bottle to balance just right that the flow isnt too hard. Though my fish seems to enjoy playing in that, i look up and hes swimming into the stream and gets pushed down then goes right back to it XD

Thank you guys for the suggestions. I'm going to look into the sponge filters. but how do you exactly "baffle" a filter? What material can be used?
