Smile New Tank

I'm starting a new tank that is going to be my sorority tank and I wanted your guys opinion on how I'm setting it up. This is gonna be for 6 girls and possibly a few bottom feeders and shrimp (haven't decided yet on what they will be or if I really want them advice on tank mates is most appreciated.)

10 Gallon
Elite Stingray Filter
Heater: so it will be kept at 78 exactly
Plants:
Mini Water Lettuce (for the top)
Java Moss (this will be rooted to a log, and if it spreads a few small hiding decorations)
Marimo/Moss Balls
Vallisneria

I haven't decided on a good substrate yet can anyone suggest some? Preferably black or sand colored.
