Just want to warn you off the lamp - the temp when it is on is great, but when you turn it off the temperature will drop pretty rapidly in a container that small (smaller water volumes = less stable temperatures) and that fluctuation could be pretty dangerous for him. Maybe rather than turn it off, cover the vase with a towel or something? That way he still gets darkness, so he can rest, but he doesn't have to cope with changing temperatures.

I leave the lamp on about 18 hours a day. When I do turn it off, it is only for 2 or 3 hours at a time. I never let the temp get below 75. Just fed him and Squirt a small cunck of worm, a piece. Good gosh!! Did they like that.

Even in two or three hours, the temperature drop will be quite marked - still enough to stress him. And they do need a good 4+ hours of darkness to be able to rest in.

I think it is not so good to have light on them all the time. Normally it is recommended to give a fish normal light hours. (sunrise, sunset kind of stuff)
Like I turn my tank lights on at 10am and turn them off at 10pm. :)
