Well, I think he looks ok, but I could totally be wrong. I believe one brand has rather small pellets, so that could be where some folks are getting those higher numbers?
What pellet brand do you feed?

Whilst once a day isn't really harmful, twice a day is generally better, the way that it's better for humans to eat several small meals rather than one huge one. It's less like binging that way.

What brand are you feeding? The size of the pellet matters a lot. I just know the two brands I fed, and If I'm feeding Hikari I do 2 pellets twice a day, right now I'm feeding new life spectrum which are really small so I usually do 3-4 twice a day.

Stick with twice a day, it's better to split their food into 2 small meals, since wild bettas would probably be hunting throughout the day.

Another thing I've heard that I've found helpful when gauging how much to feed is that a bettas eye is about the same size as their stomach. I feed mine a little less that their eye size worth twice a day.

So I picked up a Betta from the pet store a couple days ago and he still won't eat the pellets that I give him. Will he eventually just eat what I give him, or should I get him something else?

Funny thing, I decided to go out back and see if there were any mosquitoes or their larvae in my standing water on top of our pool cover, found a few and dropped them one at a time in the water, he devoured them. Is it okay to feed him those?

Yes. :) Live food is excellent for bettas. Just be aware that he will get used to eating it and may refuse to go back to pellets if your supply runs out. :p

No, he looks healthy! :)

I do 2 small meals, like other people have mentioned... My pellets vary in size from small to kind of large, so I do 2-3 twice a day depending on size of the pellets I pick out. I fast one day a week.
