just bought

I just bought a male betta today and i havent yet bought a heater... how long will he last until i get 1

He will last quite a long time as long as the water is not freezing(anywhere below 60*F or so) Remember to get a suitable sized heater for you tanks size :D

If you can manage to keep him above 70F, 21C, he should be OK until you can get the heater. Anything much less and he will slow down almost to a stop. Bettas do best around 80F, 27C, but like most fish they can adapt somewhat to less than optimum conditions.

What size tank do you have?
Hydor and Marineland both make good 7w preset heaters, the temp will remain generally between 76-78. Those are good for less than 5 gallons, upward of that you'll want a good 25w heater, and more than 10 gallons you'll want a 50w. I personally like the Hydor ones, but that's just me :)
