Is this a bubble nest?

So as I have mentioned I am new to Bettas. I have had my new boy for a few days now. So this morning I woke and say this in the tank. Is this a bubble nest?




Is it a good sign? Does it mean he is adjusting okay? Or is it just something they do rather they are healthy and happy or not?

Welcome to world of Betta keeping! Just fair warning, they are very addictive.

That would be a bubble nest alright. Male Bettas originally build these nests for breeding purposes, but they can also make them quite randomly. Even females have even been know to make bubble nests. Generally speaking, they are a good sign! A healthy and happy Betta is usually more likely to build them. It should be noted that having a male that doesn't build bubble nests doesn't mean he's unhealthy. Some are very picky or just not interested in making them.

As to whether it's a good sign, people are pretty divided on the issue. For me, it just means they are ready in case a female happens along. It doesn't indicate health - I've seen really sick bettas building amazing nests, and perfectly healthy fish not building any at all.

I've seen pictures of half dead bettas in those tiny cups in walmart that have bubble nests in their cups so I don't think it indicates health or happiness although I'm sure they are more likely to do this if the water chemistry is perfect and they are healthier. I think it's more an indication of readiness to mate. Some do it after or while they can see another male or their reflection so it might be because they want to prove they have the better nest making skills for a female to pick him.
