With sand, be sure to poke it with a stick and stir it once a week. Otherwise, it will go bad. Very bad.

what do you mean by very bad?

I've heard that the sand can harbor gas pockets and they may explode killing your fish.

Fain moves his gravel around. Not sure if he's looking for food or just amusing himself. Either way, the gravel gets moved during the six days that I don't vacuum it.

Was it always gray? I am afraid your sand may have gone bad. I had white sand and I didn't know that I was supposed to stir it and it started to turn gray. When I finally did stir it, it released a horrible smell and 3 of my cory cats died. My advice is if you can, replace the sand and then be sure to stir it once a week.

What happens when you don't stir sand is it develops these little pockets of toxic gas that make the sand go bad and the gas can kill.

Yeah, I'm sorry you have to do that. I didn't know I was supposed to stir it up either and I had to buy new sand also. In my case, it was really bad because I had bottom dwellers. Good luck!

You don't have to buy new sand, just clean the one you have now to flush out the toxic stuff in it. wash it in bleach and rinse it over and over again, and soak in a container for a few days.

but if you prefer buying new sand over spending ages cleaning your old one, then go for it.
